Dandi March and Jalianwala in Palestine?

Rueters reports : "Gandhi's Grandson Urges Palestinians to March Home"

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - The grandson of Mahatma Gandhi urged
Palestinian refugees Sunday to march home from Jordan en masse, even if the Israelis "kill 200 people," to shock the world into taking notice. Arun Gandhi, whose pacifist grandfather helped end British control over the Indian subcontinent, proposed to the Palestinian parliament a peaceful march of 50,000 refugees across the Jordan River and said lawmakers should lead the way. "What would happen? Maybe the Israeli army would shoot and kill several. They may kill 100. They may kill 200 men, women and children. And that would shock the world. The world will get up and say, 'What is going on?"' he said.

Interesting. I want to say I support it. But how can I - can I ask 200 people to go get killed? Ask the yuppy elite Indians in the US what they think of Gandhi - it's not very flattering.

Anyways, I'll return to our discussion later Heraclius.

I dare say that this idea is a good one in theory on the Palestinian side. I would be willing to bet $1000 that the Israeli's would not fire a shot. (Although whether Hamas would put a few guys into the crowd to fire on Israeli troops and hope for return fire is another thing altogether.)

Now, would they get over the Jordan River? Doubtful. They would be stopped at the bridge. But, let's assume, arguendo, that they did get over the bridge and did make it into pre-1967 Israel, the reunions, etc. would be priceless propaganda! Not to mention when they would be forced to depart, more priceless pictures and you know the press would lap that stuff up! I have said this for the last year...if Arafat got up, walked out of his Ramallah compund, walked down the street, toward Jerusalem to Prime Minister Sharon's house...do you really think anyone would physically stop him???? If he stood outside the PM office and said "I want to speak to Gen. Sharon..now!" you think Sharon wouldn't? He would look like a coward if he didnt!

Reagan said to Gobachev at their summitt in Iceland..."I want to talk to you alone" and they did...Forget the predicates for a meeting, or the aides negotiating what is talked about...let two men, sit down over tea, hummus, and Matzah and hash out differences. THey have both killed too many, and seen too much blood...and should not want to die with that on their hands. Get rid of the aides, the props, the speeches...get out maps and look at eachother as Yasser and Ariel...you know...like grown ups do!

I do agree with you that most Indians I know, while they respect Gandhi for what he did then, they see no modern day application to his theories. Leave it to British to leave another mess in Jammu/Kashmir for the US to be blamed for!
